1: 1.1 About CalSWIM 2: 3: CalSWIM is an ongoing project with the goal of facilitating 4: open, coordinated, integrated, and informed decisions for 5: those interested in water resources. With initial focus on California, CalSWIM provides a 6: framework for engaging water management professionals, scientists, and 7: the general public in the process of sharing information about water 8: resources, therefore 9: benefiting from critical open supervision of the content, and 10: from valuable volunteer contributions that cannot occur in a closed 11: infrastructure. The current work aims at creating a public and easily 12: updatable information infrastructure of "all things watershed" that 13: includes all watersheds in 14: California. 15: 16: *For contributors*. In CalSWIM you can: 17: create your own pages with watershed information, add and correct 18: certain pages created by others, add events, upload documents (images, 19: Word and PDF files, Excel spreadsheets, etc.), make your publicly 20: accessible relational database available to others, view data available 21: in the linked databases, create tables and charts with data from linked databases, create maps with data from linked databases, and much more! [More...>Info+for+Contributors] 22: 23: *Attribution and access control*. Given 24: that this wiki relates to data that is often the basis for important 25: strategic water management policies, it takes attribution and access 26: control very seriously. Unlike Wikipedia, where all pages can be edited 27: by everyone, even anonymous web surfers, CalSWIM requires a 28: registration to anyone wanting to contribute. From then on, all actions 29: made by contributors are attributed to those contributors, so everyone 30: can see who did what. Also, while all pages can be viewed by everyone, 31: some pages can only be edited by specific users. [More...>Access+Control] 32: 33: 1.1.1 Historical Context 34: 35: The CalSWIM project started in 2004 under the supervision of UCI professors Crista Lopes and Stanley Grant, and from a contract with the Orange County Stormwater Program. Like so many other scientific cyberinfrastructures, the CalSWIM web 36: site started as a closed infrastructure, i.e. its update has been 37: controlled by a small number of individuals, and any changes to it 38: required the intervention of web-knowledgeable professionals. This model 39: does not scale to the ambition of the CalSWIM project. In order to make 40: this cyberinfrastructure sustainable, expandable, outreaching, and 41: continually up-to-date, starting in 2007 we transformed CalSWIM into an 42: Open Collaborative Information Repository, in the form of a wiki with 43: advanced content management features, including databases, maps, 44: and other forms of digital data. 45: 46: Open information infrastructures such as the one we are developing are 47: sometimes met with skepticism from their users. The chaotic nature of 48: Wikipedia (one the most visible collaborative information repositories) is not appropriate for open cyberinfrastructures supporting 49: collaboration over scientific and regulatory information. The CalSWIM 50: wiki takes issues of trust and credibility into consideration 51: in its design. Trust is a complex concept based on personal and social 52: factors, that includes assurances about data security, knowledge about 53: data provenance, knowledge about authors’ reputations, and assurances 54: about author attribution (citations and quotations) in uncontrolled 55: contexts. 56: 57: 1.1.1 Current Support 58: 59: Part of the CalSWIM Wiki project is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. 60: 61: 1.1.1 Contact 62: 63: For any matters pertaining to this wiki, please contact Prof. Crista Lopes (lopes ~~at~~ uci ~~dot~~ edu). 64: 65: 1.1.1 Credits 66: 67: * *UCI Faculty* 68: ** Prof. [Stan Grant>http://www.eng.uci.edu/user/53], Department of Chemical Engineering and Material Sciences 69: ** Prof. [Crista Videira Lopes>http://ics.uci.edu/~lopes], Department of Informatics 70: * *UCI Students* 71: ** [Yasser Ganjisaffar>http://ics.uci.edu/~yganjisa] 72: ** [Sushil Krishna Bajracharya>http://www.ics.uci.edu/~sbajrach] 73: ** Barry Doyle 74: ** Amir Haghighat 75: ** Abhishek Pednekar 76: * *UC staff* 77: ** Darren Haver 78: * *OCGOV supervisor* 79: ** Chris Crompton 80: * *OCGOV staff* 81: ** Amanda Carr 82: ** Carmen Oancea 83: * *OCGOV consultant* 84: ** Brock Bernstein 85: * *Tetra Tech staff* 86: ** Steve Parker 87: ** Patti Sexton 88: * *The National Science Foundation* 89: ** Office of Cyberinfrastructure
